Shropshire based Gardens by Design have received recognition for their high quality landscaping work by receiving an award at the Association of Professional Landscapers annual award ceremony which took place in Leicestershire last month.

The company received a Commendation award in the Project Value – Under £10,000 category which was presented to them by garden designer Andy Sturgeon.

The scheme involved the restoration of a garden belonging to a period house, following a design supplied by Victoria Nettleton. The job involved the re-construction of raised beds, pathways and the installation of a Mill Wheel water feature. The garden had, at one time, a large timber framed lean to greenhouse which had long since been dismantled but the brick outline remained; this too required attention and played a key part in the overall design. The key to this project was to source the right materials for the job in keeping with the property. Whilst modern building processes were used in the construction, the final appearance was one of old age.

Commenting on their success, David from Gardens by Design said, “To have received a national award such as this is absolutely fabulous for us especially as we are only a small family run business. When I entered the awards I never expected that I should have been lucky to have received one as the competition was extremely high. It was a great opportunity to look at some of the other entrants when we attended the awards, made even better by receiving one myself.

Chair of the judging panel and APL vice-chairman, Mark Gregory said, “We received a record number of entries this year and the standard was exceptionally high. Landscaping really does benefit from attention to detail and many of the winning schemes showed this. Many congratulations to Gardens by Design on their success.”

The APL Awards, sponsored by Bradstone, recognize the very best in landscaping undertaken by APL members in projects that range from smaller projects to garden maintenance to contracts of over £50,000. The awards are a celebration of the high standards that have been achieved by members and a demonstration of the APL’s commitment to quality landscaping.
